Kent (The Remains of the Day)
Kent is a county located in England near the southeast portion of Great Britain. It was originally a more rural county known for its farmlands, being named the "Garden of England". However, as the city of London expanded during the 1900s, it slowly crept into Kent and the county developed some more industrious features such as papermaking and engineering. InĀ The Remains of the Day, Kent is featured during Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield's visit to Mr. Farraday at Darlington Hall, as they have lived in Kent for two decades. Their visit is significant, since it is one of the only times where Stevens has denied working for Lord Darlington.
"Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield are an American couple who have been settled in England -- somewhere in Kent, I understand -- for some twenty years." (pg. 122).
