Paris, France
Paris, France is the capital of France and has been one of the most influential cities in history due to its excellence in science, finance, fashion, diplomacy, and commerce. In The Remains of the Day, the diplomacy characteristic of Paris is highlighted. In the second chapter, Day Two Morning, Mr. Stevens is providing a flashback to when Lord Darlington had an evening with many diplomats including a French foreign policy representative, regarding the reparations that Germany had to face after WW1. The topic of the meeting was to discuss the harshness of the conditions in the Treaty of Versailles, but the Frenchman offered major resistance to this idea. It is said that a series of letters and telegrams were sent back and forth from Darlington's estate and Paris. This eventually resulted in Darlington making three quick trips to Paris, in order to set a date for an 'off the record' conference.
