New York

New York City, a port city in the state of New York, lies in the north eastern United States. The city is the largest metropolis in the United States. New York City is extremely influential in American culture as well as other cultures around the world. Furthermore, the city is extraordinarily diverse, with hundreds of ethnic neighborhoods across its five burrows. Home to theater, trade, fashion, sport, etc, NYC is regarded as one of the most ideal urban centers in the world. Historically, New York has been a hub for immigrants entering through Ellis Island. The city appears in hundreds of movies, poems, and novels, written by those of a variety of ethnic backgrounds and cultures. For example, in Kazuo Ishiguro's novel The Remains of the Day, New York City is mentioned. The narrator describes the stark contrast between a NYC taxi driver and an English Butler. He says, "a taxi driver in New York regularly adressed his fare in a manner which if repeated in London would end in some sort of fracas, if not in the fellow being frogmarched to the nearest police station" (Ishiguro 16). An English butler remarks at the culture of New York City, showing its reach on the global scale.
