France

At the beginning of the 1930s, France was hit by the Great Depression. France did not recover from the economic problems that were caused by the Depression which led to some political unrest within the country. This was evidenced by the extreme political parties that grew in power during this time. On the left was the Popular Front, an alliance between several radical left-wing groups. On the right were groups like the French Popular Party, a fascist and anti-Semitic political party. France was divided politically as it inched closer and closer to war with Germany.

Quotes:

"I am happy to assure you all here that I will bring what modest influence I have to encourage certain changes of emphasis in French policy in accordance with much of what has been said here." (Ishiguro 100)
