In Remains of the Day:

West Country England is the ideal place that Stevens wants to escape to. In the prologue, he sees it as a way to escape the pressures of his life at Darlington Hall as a butler. He decides to travel there to get away from his daily stresses after he realizes he is doing too much. His employer suggests it to him and "the notion of a trip to the West Country took an ever-increasing hold on my thoughts" (Ishiguro 2). He overthinks which clothes to bring, how to prepare, and every aspect of the trip that is possible because he sees this West Country as a way to escape.

Context:

West Country England consists of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and Bristol (Wikipedia). It is a largely rural and slow-paced area consisting of many different people and regions and, therefore, is difficult to define because it is so broad. It is seen as beautiful and peaceful and an escape (Culture Trip).
