Guernsey
Guernsey is an island located in the English Channel, and it is the second largest in the English Channel. Historically, Guernsey has had a mix of British and Norman culture, yet British culture has typically dominated. During the 18th century, Guernsey residents began to settle in North America, notably in Guernsey County, Ohio. On the island itself, its close proximity to the English Coast and the European continent gave it excellent success in maritime trade. Furthermore, wars in Spain and France allowed for Guernsey shipowners to further exploit its neighbors trading needs. In an excerpt from The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Guernsey is mentioned in passing. Equiano writes, "And in little time we sailed for Guernsey" (Ch. 3). This line is not extremely signifigant in itself, yet it shows the broader context of Guernsey's importance in international trade. The small island held great trading power, which will eventually decline in the 19th century.
