The Education Of African American Children

Description:

The poem that I chose to do is, A Poem For My Librarian, Mrs. Long by Nikki Giovanni, this poem is a little African American girl writing a letter to her librarian that helped her understand and opened her eyes to different types of literature and what literature can do for an individual. For the painting that correlates to the poem I chose to do I chose to focus on the paining called, “by Norman Rockwell this painting is of Ruby Bridges walking into school with books in her hand and being guarded. I chose to corelate this poem and artowork togther, because both art pieces are showing the education of an African American girl. The painting of Ruby Brigdes of course shows a more in depth look at the racism side of the school system but it also shows the power of intellect and how school is a place of learning and the educators that can help open her eyes to new ideas and new concepts. The idea of eduction and teachers expanding the minds of these children and heloing them open their minds to new concepts and ideas. In Giovanni’s poem she states, “Mrs. Long always glad to see you.” The idea that an individual of higher power is showing excitement and pleasure in seeing a young African American girl coming in to go and read and explore the fantisy side of literature. Another influential quote from Giovanni’s poem was when she wrote, “But there was a world somewhere out there and Mrs. Long opened that wardrobe…” The impact that just one individual can have on a child especially when that individual opens their eyes to a new concept otr a new idea. It allows the child to grow and furnish his or her mind, it also helps them develop into future adults and creates an understanding for them and allows them to place these concepts that they are learning in schools and through literature to real life situations or real life concepts.
