Black Thursday

Description:

Black Thursday was the day the stock market crashed and forever changed the world forever. October 24th, 1929, was the essential day that the stock market crashed and began the start of the great depression. Banks and investment companies brought up stock to stem from the panic of investors. This was just the start but would become a continuous issue and begin the great depression. Dow Jones went down a significant amount on this day. It went down a significant eleven percent. In this photo, the people are gathered on the steps of The New York Stock Exchange. They were scared and confused because not enough information was being given. This is a huge change because people were going to start losing their jobs and lead to the biggest downfall in American history. (Brittanica) The poem that I have chosen for this photo is "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" by Jay Gorney. After his appliance business went bankrupt, he decided to go into the music business. "Once I built a railroad, now it's done. Brother can you spare a dime?" (Gorney) He writes that he built a railroad and now it is done. The railroad is a metaphor for what has been done. "Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother can you spare a dime?" (Gorney) He uses a similar wording here, but he says it with a tower. He is referring to the work that has been done and has been built higher and higher. He also talks about what it takes to build the tower. In conclusion, Black Thursday will forever go down in history as one of the toughest days in American history. The state of economic crisis was in shambles. Gorney talked about how he built from the ground up and still needed more.
