South America
South America is a continent that is mostly in the southern hemisphere and completely in the western hemisphere. This continent is south of North America, and contains countries such as Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and many more. It is briefly mentioned in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein when the creature asks Victor Frankenstein to create a female counterpart of his species. In his proposal, the creature says that he and his counterpart will flee to South America where Frankenstein will never see or hear from them again. During the early 1800’s all Spanish territories in South America gained their independence from Spain and the power of the Catholic church was also decreasing. Because of this, South America began to see shifts in politics and immigration is also on the rise at this time. Art was influenced by the Europeans, but artists in South America during the early 1800’s also had their own approach to their creations. In Frankenstein, the continent is only mentioned once as a place for the creature and his counterpart to hypothetically flee to in order to never see Frankenstein again. Because of this, it makes me feel that British people, with the inclusion of Mary Shelly, didn’t think of South America as much throughout this time. However, many countries in South America were under development and seeing shifts in politics at the time, so it wasn't some vacant place the creature could simply escape to in order to be alone. Either way, South America is far from Europe and is still a place the creature and his supposed counterpart could escape to in order to never see Frankenstein again.
