Description:
"Make your statement, face your fear."
While the Gothic is typically associated with horror, I do think that it lends itself to suspense. The Gothic elements of the suspense focused podcast, The Magnus Archives helps exemplify this. By the process of rerecording old audio logs – very reminiscent of the Gothic trope of finding manuscripts – the main character of this fiction podcast continually has suspense building, which again is reminiscent of the long twisting turns, the passage of these old gothic castles. The setting that is built in this audio focused media is Gothic. That is not the only Gothic aspect of The Magnus Archives. Just like in the novels that we are reading for class, the monsters and supernatural things that occur here all have a meaning behind them. They are not there only for scares. Rather they are manifestations of fears and anxieties that are in the time and place, they have meaning behind them, which makes these monster be even more terrifying that they would be otherwise.
