An addition to the Vatican complex, the Sistine Chapel was built for Pope Sixtus IV from 1477-1480. From 1508 to 1512, Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo depicted several scenes from the Bible, including the iconic The Creation of Adam. This Renaissance artwork is an example of the growing complexity of art to include depth and even optical illusions as Michelangelo realized that the curved nature of the ceiling would add a unique dimension to his work.
