Cape of Good Hope
The Cape of Good Hope is located on the Cape Peninsula of South Africa, though a common misperception is that it is the southern tip of Africa (which is Cape Agulhas). The Cape of Good Hope has nevertheless been significant to sailors as it marks where they begin to sail more eastward than southward. Portuguese explorer Bartolomeau Dias made the first modern rounding of the Cape in 1488 as he attempted to form trade relations with the Far East.
