The Melbourne Public Library, now called the State Library of Victoria, is located on Swanston Street, one of the main north-south streets originally laid out in the 1837 Hoddle Grid in the center of Melbourne, southeast Australia. It first opened in 1856, with a collection of 3,800 books.
