Bow Street is a street in Westminster, Central London. It was home to the Bow Street Runners, a voluntary police force, established in 1750. From 1740, the Bow Street Magistrate’s Court was located on the street. In the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Bow Street was also known for prostitution. In March 1919, the street was the site of the Battle of Bow Street, when Australian, US, and Canadian servicemen clashed with the police. Notable people who have lived on Bow Street include Oliver Cromwell and publisher Edmund Curll. The Royal Opera House is located on Bow Street, though the modern public entrance is on the East side of Covent Garden.
