The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. From the seventeenth century onward, the island had successively been under Dutch, French, and British colonial rule, gaining independence in 1968. Mauritius is the only known home of the now-extinct dodo bird.
