Located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar was ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and remains a British Overseas Territory. It became an important base for the British Royal Navy in the nineteenth century and remained significant during the Second World War as a means to control the entrance to the Mediterranean. It is most famous for the Rock of Gibraltar, a massive limestone promontory.
