Sumatra is a large island west of Java and south of the Malay Peninsula, which is part of Indonesia. In the eighteenth century, Sumatra came under the control of the Dutch East Indies and became a major producer of pepper, rubber, and oil. It became independent in 1949. Sumatra is home to endangered animals such as the Sumatran tiger and elephant. Today, Sumatra is the largest producer of Indonesian coffee.
