Hoxton is an area in East London and is part of the London Borough of Hackney, England. It gained notoriety in 1605 as the home of William Parker, Lord Monteagle, who received a letter that tipped him off to the Gunpower Plot, leading to the arrest of Guy Fawkes and Francis Tresham’s Parker’s brother-in-law. In the nineteenth century, the area was populated by slums and was a center of the furniture trade. Notable sites in the area include the Augustinian Priory—church and school of St. Monica in Hoxton Square, which were built in the 1860s. The Priory was the first Augustinian House in England since the Reformation.
