Aldgate Pump is a historic water pump located at the junction of Aldgate, Fenchurch Street and Leadenhall Street, in the City of London, England. The pump is notable as the symbolic start of the East End of London. The pump is also known for the Aldgate Pump Epidemic, when several hundred people died from drinking the water; it was later determined that the underground streams that provided the pump’s water had been tainted by decaying bodies from surrounding graveyards. The pump was relocated in 1876 and its supplying water reconnected by the New River Company.
