The Kashmir valley, or the Vale of Kashmir, is a valley in the Kashmir region in the north of the Indian Subcontinent, which is administered by India. The valley is bordered by the Pir Panjal mountain Range to the southwest and the main Himalayas range on the northeast. It was ruled by the Afghan Durrani Empire from 1747–1819, when it was annexed by the Sikhs. After the defeat of in the First Anglo-Sikh War, Kashmir and Jammu were established as a new state and ruled by the Raja of Jammu under the paramountcy of the British until 1947.
