Herculaneum
Herculaneum was an ancient town destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. It lay under 50-60 feet (20 meters) of ash and was virtually unexplored until the early eighteenth century. Many wooden artifacts, however, were preserved despite the eruption. In 1980, excavators also discovered 400 preserved skeletons of people who perished.
