Founding of the Royal University of Ireland
The University Education Act of 1879 had proposed the founding of a degree-granting university where candidates could sit examinations regardless of whether or not they attended the colleges. Accordingly, the Royal University of Ireland was established on 27 April 1880. It would be dissolved in 1909. Image: Coat of arms, Queen's University, Belfast. Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
