Jewish Hospital in Poland from "If I Should Die Before I Wake"
One of the locations in "If I should Die Before I Wake" by Han Nolan is a Jewish Hospital in Poland during the Holocaust. This is where 16-year-old Neo-nazi Hilary is in recovery from a serious motorcycle accident caused by her boyfriend Brad. This location is significant because it is where somehow in Hilary's mind she switches back and forth between Hilary and a girl named Chana. In the hospital, she is forced to experience the horrors Chana experiences as a Holocaust victim. Her entire perspective is changed while in this hospital and she no longer carries such a deep hatred towards Jews. When she finally wakes up as Hilary, she says "I remember it all. It's my life, too, now. You and me, we share the same past" (281). This hosptial is the place that has caused her to undergo such drastic change from a Neo-Nazi to an understanding and compassionate person who even ends up saving her Jewish neighbor Spencer's life. The hospital seems like any oridnary hospital, but is the place where Hilary does a complete 360 as a person and lets go of the intese hatred she has towards Jews. Also the fact that it is a Jewish Hospital is very ironic and plays a role in her change.
