Lyceum Gallery (New York, 1849)
12th public exhibition of the Greek Slave: September through 12 December 1849
The second exhibition of the Greek Slave in New York was, like the first, sponsored by the National Academy of Design. The Lyceum Gallery was located on the third floor of the new New York Society Library and contained, in addition to Powers's Greek Slave, Fisher Boy, Proserpine, and Jackson, around 60 paintings depicting the American West that were on loan from the collection of merchant Gideon Nye. As it had been during its prior stint in New York, the statue was well received, and the relative failure of the exhibition was due primarily to viewers' general waning interest (Wunder 241).
