Amazon Basin

The Amazon Basin is located in South America and is the region drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. It is approximately 6.3 million square kilometers (2.1 million square miles) in area. Much of the Basin is covered by the Amazon Rain Forest, and it is located in eight different South American countries. There are 1,400 mammal species, 1,500 bird species, 2,500 fish species, and 1,500 amphibian species living in this region.
