Amsterdam

The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam reached its Golden Age in the seventeenth century, establishing Dutch colonies in much of the world, most notably the Dutch East India Company and Dutch West India Company. Amsterdam is known for its canals, diamond and finance industries, and rich art history. Anne Frank and her family took refuge in Amsterdam during World War II. Rembrandt and van Gogh both lived in Amsterdam for a time.
