Athenaeum
The Athenaeum was built in 1837 as the club building of the Manchester Athenaeum for the Advancement and Diffusion of Knowledge, a society formed in 1835. The building, designed by architect Sir Charles Barry in the Italian palazzo style, is now part of the Manchester Art Gallery. Related BRANCH article: Robert O'Kell, "On Young England."
