Baltimore

Established in 1729, Baltimore is the most populous city in the state of Maryland in the United States. It is located only 40 miles from Washington D.C. It is a large Mid-Atlantic seaport and was once a hub of immigration. The Port of Baltimore was established to aid in the tobacco trade. Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital are located here. Famous people who have lived in Baltimore include Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass, F. Scott Fitzgerald, W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Gertrude Stein, and Babe Ruth. The US National Anthem was composed here after the nearby battle at Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.
