Belgrave Square

Belgrave Square is a garden square built in the 19th centruy. It is the centeral part of the Belgravia district, a very affluent district in London. It is politically important to both London and the world, as it is the home to several embassies. The Square also features gardens with famous statues of figures such as Simon Bolivar and Christopher Columbus.

In his poem "West London" Matthew Arnold refrences this location when he writes, "Crouched on the pavement, close by Belgrave Square, / A tramp I saw, ill, moody, and tongue-tied." Here, Arnold is clearly contrasting the tramp with the very affluent nature of Belgrave Square.
