In 1833, a journal in Boston published an illustration of the five races of man. Going in the numbered order, there is the European race which is described as “distinguished from all the rest”, the African race, the Malays who are simply described as “brown”, the Asiatics and Mongolians, and the Americans who are described as “of a copper color, resembling rusty iron or cinnamon”.  This illustration reveals the Victorian belief that whiteness was dependent upon appearances.  Victorian scientists and sociologists believed they could observe differences between races.  They claimed all races “differ in color and appearance of their hair, and eyes, and in the shapes of their lips, noses… as well as in color and shape of their faces” illustrations like this were used to educate their white audience who did not have interactions with people of different races.
