Caracas

Caracas is the capital city of Venezuela, situated on the Guaire river in the north of the country. The city was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1567 and named Santiago de León de Caracas. It was the site of the signing of a declaration of Venezuelan independence in 1811. The city was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1812.
