Chad has been occupied since in the seventh millennium BCE, and for more than two thousand years, Chad was home to agricultural civilizations. France conquered the area in 1920 and relied on the area for cotton production. Chad gained independence in 1960. Chad experienced Civil War from 1965 to 1979. Arabic and French are the official languages, though many dialects are spoken.
