Charleston

Charleston is the largest city in the state of South Carolina in the United States. Located on the Charleston Harbor, it was founded in 1670 and named for King Charles II of England. Charleston played a large role in the slave trade and much of the area was dominated by plantations run by slave labor. Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired, is located in Charleston Harbor. Charleston has long been known as the “Holy City.”
