Chesapeake Bay is an estuary located in the states of Maryland and Virginia on the east coast of the United States. During the American War of Independence, it was the site of the 1781 Battle of the Chesapeake between the British and the French fleets. The French victory prevented the British navy from relieving the forces of Lord Cornwallis during the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia.
