Christchurch
Christchurch is the largest island on New Zealand’s South Island. It is New Zealand’s third most populous city. It was likely first settled by humans in 1250, and it became a British city in 1856. The University of Canterbury (New Zealand’s second-oldest university) is located here. It is considered a “gateway city” for Antarctic exploration, as it hosted several bases for Antarctic expeditions.
