Cumberland, often seen in Frankenstein as Cumberland and Westmoreland or the Lakes of Cumberland, is a historical country in Northwest England. The site is well known as the Lake District, home to many infamous poets. This place is subtlety featured in Frankenstein simply as a stop in Victor’s journey to northern Scottland. It is listed on the World Heritage Site, these are locations that demonstrate culture and significance globally, for three main reasons: its natural beauty, the man-made landscape evolving over thousands of years, and the literary and artistic connections. (Friends of Real Lancashire) Though Cumberland (and Westmoreland) don’t technically exist anymore, many institutions and companies still bare both names; we may see the location as Cumbria on the map today. It is without a doubt that Mary Shelley and her husband were avid visitors of the Lake District, and it is said that a lot the scenery in her work was inspired by this location. Many people of the 1800's adored Cumberland because of its sublime and breathtaking scenery. I think Cumberland is a significant reference in Frankenstein because it aligns with the themes of the Romantic Period: nature vs. science, especially relating to the Lake District that was home to many Romantic poets like Wordsworth and Coleridge who celebrated the power of nature in their era. The beauty of the scene contrasts with the gruesome elements of the story; we see this throughout many places in Frankenstein where Victor often seeks refuge in nature from the horror of his own consequences.
