England (NC, Letter to WW)
England is perhaps the most famous, or infamous, of the area known as the United Kingdom. The English are commonly known as one of the largest colonizers in the world, having at one point occupied or invaded almost every single land mass on this world. England was also a prominent player in the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, although slavery was never officially legalized in the country. British merchants typically transported slaves from Western Africa to their North American colonies to be enslaved on the plantations, which is seen in "The Negro's Complaint" by William Cowper, where the narrator recounts how "Men from England bought and sold me" (5). The sale and trade of slaves was outlawed in England after the passage of The Slave Trade Act of 1807 by the British parliament, but owning slaves was not outlawed until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833; even then, there were exceptions made for companies such as the East India Company.
