Finsbury Technical College, London

Finsbury College, opened in 1893, is now recognized as the first technical college in England. The College was set up in 1876 with aims to improve the training of craftsmen, to create a central institution in London, and to conduct a system of qualifying examinations in technical subjects.

screen shot from Paul filmOn 20 February 1896, Robert W. Paul exhibits his moving-image projection, the “Theatrograph,” at Finsbury Technical College in London. This was the most successful British equivalent of the French film projector, dubbed the “Cinématographe.” The Cinématographe was exhibited the previous year, 1895, by Auguste and Louis Lumière.
