The 1815 Congress of Vienna made Frankfurt a sovereign city state, but the city was annexed by Prussia following the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. In 1920, it was briefly occupied by French troops as part of an Allied occupation of the Rhineland. Frankfurt suffered severe bombing during the Second World War.
