Frome, Somerset

During the late 1700s, Frome was a thriving town in Somerset with a rich history. By the 18th century, Frome had grown rapidly and became one of the largest towns, with a population of over 8,000.  Frome had a large social scene, with various churches, chapels, and public institutions. The parish church underwent restoration in the mid-19th century, reflecting the town's commitment to preserving its historical heritage. The town hosted markets and fairs, including cattle and cheese fairs, which were central to its social and economic life. Frome in the late 1700s was a dynamic and prosperous town, reflecting the broader economic and social changes of the period.

Christina Rossetti and her mother, Frances, moved to Frome to start a school. This move was partly due to financial difficulties the family was facing at the time. The school they attempted to establish was not successful, and Christina found the experience challenging.  By April 1854, the school had failed, and Christina and her mother returned to London. Shortly after their return, Christina's father, Gabriele Rossetti, passed away. Although her time in Frome was brief and not particularly happy, it is commemorated in the town.  Christina Rossetti's time in Frome was a small but significant chapter in her life, reflecting her resilience and dedication to her family.
