Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka and acts as the administrative center of the Southern Province. Galle has been controlled by the Portuguese and the Dutch during the colonial period. The British took control of Sri Lanka in 1796. The city was devastated in 2004 by a massive tsunami, and thousands were killed.
