Germany (Disabled)
Germany is a country located in Central Europe, neighboring several other countries such as France, Austria, and Poland. The German Confederation was first formed in 1815 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire and the end of the Napoleonic Wars, but Germany did not become a nation-state until 1871. Germany became involved in World War I in 1914, declaring war on Russia and becoming the leader of the Central Powers. In 1939, Nazi Germany started World War II with Hitler's invasion of Poland and was responsible for the death of millions of Jewish people during the Holocaust.
In "Disabled," the narrator describes life after fighting in World War I and mentions "Germans he scarcely thought of; all their guilt, / And Austria's, did not move him" (lines 30-31).
