Grub Street
Grub Street was a street in the Cripplegate Ward near Moorfields in London, England. It ran from Fore Street to St Giles-without-Cripplegate. In the seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries, it was known for its concentration of “hack writers”—impoverished aspiring poets and publishers. The street was later renamed Milton Street, which is now part of the Barbican Estate. However, Grub Street is still a term for impoverished hack writers and “low” writing.
