Haiti

Haiti is a country located on the western part of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. It borders the Dominican Republic. Its capital city is Port-au-Prince. During Christopher Columbus’s first voyage, he landed on Haiti and mistakenly believed it was India or China. Haiti was under French rule from the seventeenth century, but between 1791 and 1804 Haitian slaves and free people of color rebelled in the Haitian Revolution and defeated the French army. Haiti was established as a sovereign nation in 1804. In 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, tragically killing between 100,000–160,000 people and severely damaging large sections of Port-au-Prince.
