Herat
Herat is a city in western Afghanistan, located in the valley of the Hari River. The Durrani Empire controlled Herat from 1747 until it became independent in 1824 during a split between the Durranis and the Barakzais. In the mid-nineteenth century Persia repeatedly laid claim to the city and invaded it, leading to the Anglo-Persian War of 1856–57. Today, Herat is Afghanistan’s third-largest city.
