Honduras is a country in Central America, bordering Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. A Spanish colony since the Spanish invasion of the sixteenth century, Honduras gained its independence in 1821. Prior to the invasion, the Mayan civilization flourished in much of the region. Currently, the nation’s economy is largely agricultural. The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is a lowland rainforest on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
