The Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) of Paris is home to the city's municipal government. It is located in the 4th arrondissement. The first city hall was called the Maison aux Piliers and was in use from 1357 to 1533. Construction on the Hôtel de Ville building began in 1533 and was finished in 1628. The building was burned by the Paris Commune (a radical socialist government that ruled Paris from 18 March to 28 May in 1871) as the French Army approached. The Hôtel de Ville served as the site for the proclamation of the French Third Republic in 1870. From 1873 to 1892, the Hôtel de Ville building was reconstructed to its current state.
