Historical Context 

India is the second-most populous country in the world, and the most populous democracy in the world. In the 1920’s, India was under British control, and did not gain independence until 1947 -- it had been under British imperial rule since 1858. Today, significant evidence of British influence remains.

In The Remains of Day, India is referenced in the context of a story about a “certain butler who had travelled with his employer” there. The butler is described as having shot the tiger with his employers “twelve-bores” (a gun) and, despite the heat of the moment, having remained calm and dedicated to his service as a butler.
