Ingolstadt is a city in the state of Bavaria, Germany. The city contains a Catholic University called the University of Ingolstadt that was founded in 1472. Because the University is in the country of Germany, Britain's relationship to Ingolstadt was good. There was a healthy trade relationship and an importance placed on education in both countries.
In Frankenstein, Ingolstadt is the university at which Victor attends and makes several appearances in the novel (VOL I Chapter II, II, IV, V, VI, VOL II Chapter II, IV, V). This school is extremely important to the development and education of Victor, and sets him up eventually for the destruction of himself, his creature, and his entire family. Some of the most important plot points are placed in Ingolstadt.
