The State of Israel is a country in Western Asia, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast and the Red Sea to the north. It also shares borders with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Egypt. Tel Aviv is the government center, though Jerusalem is a highly significant religious and political city, held sacred by the three major Abrahamic religions. In the twentieth century, Israel has fought several wars, often with Palestine, over land and occupied territory, particularly the West Bank, Golan Heights, and the Gaza Strip.
